Here’s how you can make a vital difference in the fight against prescription drug abuse:

PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION CHECKLIST

  • Secure all prescription medication in a locked box or cabinet to prevent others from taking it.

  • Take regular inventory of your medications to make sure nothing is missing.

  • Safely dispose of all unused or expired medications.

  • Teach young people in your life about the dangers of taking medications that were not prescribed to them.

  • Spread the word by letting friends and family members know about the dangers of unsecured prescriptions.

ABOUT US

Lock Your Meds® is a national campaign designed to reduce prescription drug abuse. Produced by National Family Partnership® (NFP), the campaign seeks to make adults aware of their potential to become “unwitting suppliers” to those who would abuse their prescription medications.

Deposit them in a permanent dropbox at a pharmacy or police station. Find a permanent drug disposal box near you here.

Check with your local government to learn when they will be holding a prescription drug take back event. The FDA sponsors several of these events each year.

Purchase an at-home disposal kit which chemically destroys the active compounds in drugs, making them safe for disposal.

If none of these options are available, remove your medications from their containers and mix them with undesirable substances like cat litter or coffee grounds. Place the mixture into a disposable container with a lid, and then seal it in a bag before placing it in the trash. DO NOT FLUSH medications unless specifically directed to do so.

Be sure to remove all personal information from empty medicine containers before disposing of them. If you cannot remove the label with the Rx number and your name and address, try scratching it off or concealing it with permanent marker or duct tape.

Secure your medication in a locking medication box or other locking structure. Keep any combinations secret, and store any keys in an equally safe place. Remember, hiding your medication is NOT a secure solution.

Further safeguard all medicines that have to remain at home by monitoring quantities. Regularly check to see if anything is missing. Download a home medicine inventory card that can help you keep track of your medications.

You may purchase a set of Locking Medicine Pouches to use in securing your medications. Each set includes 3 lockable pouches for multiple people or locations.

You may also purchase a pack of Locking Medicine Cases. Each set includes 3 cases for different users and/or storage locations. Cases can store multiple medications as well as syringes.
